Stump Grinding FAQ
Common Trees
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of using a stump grinder or cutter to remove the remaining stump of a tree after it has been cut down. The machine uses a high-speed disk with teeth to grind the stump and roots into small chips.
Why should I grind a tree stump?
Grinding a stump can remove a tripping hazard, prevent pests and diseases from spreading to healthy trees, improve the appearance of your property, and make space for new plantings or landscaping features.
How deep does stump grinding go?
Stump grinding typically goes about 4 to 6 inches below the ground surface but can go deeper if necessary, up to 12 inches or more to ensure that the bulk of the trees root system is addressed.
Can I plant a new tree where a stump was ground out?
Yes, but it’s recommended to remove as much of the sawdust and grindings as possible and fill the hole with fresh soil. This helps to ensure the new tree has access to nutrients and water. Sometimes, it may be advisable to plant the new tree a little offset from the exact location of the ground stump to avoid dense root mass areas.
Is stump grinding safe for my other plants?
Stump grinding is generally safe for surrounding plants. However, it’s important to communicate with us about any nearby plants you wish to preserve so they can take precautions to protect them.
What happens to the wood chips after grinding?
The wood chips can be used as mulch in your garden or removed by the stump grinding service. Some homeowners choose to keep the chips for landscaping purposes, while others prefer to have them hauled away.
How long does stump grinding take?
The time required for stump grinding depends on the size and type of the stump and the complexity of the root system. Most residential stumps can be ground in under an hour.
Is stump grinding messy?
Stump grinding can create a significant amount of wood chips and dust. Our professional stump grinders will take measures to contain the mess as much as possible and clean up after the job is completed.
Will stump grinding damage my property?
Stump Grinding Inc., uses techniques and equipment designed to minimize any damage to your property. We are insured in case of accidental damage.
How much does stump grinding cost?
The cost of stump grinding varies depending on the size of the stump(s), their location, and other factors like root system complexity. Prices can range from $200 for small stumps to several hundred dollars for larger ones. It’s best to get a free quote from us so we know exactly what we are dealing with.
